Part B Exam Preparation

Designed to prepare candidates for the clinical and practical components of the FOrth Part B examination, with emphasis on case presentation, clinical reasoning, and viva preparation.

What You Will Learn

The Part B Exam Preparation Course is designed to help trainees meet the demands of the Part B examination with greater maturity, structure, and confidence by strengthening their ability to analyse cases, justify treatment decisions, and communicate clinical reasoning clearly.
This course focuses on preparing candidates to think in the way the examination requires. It is not enough to know the information; candidates must also be able to interpret it, defend it, and apply it to different clinical scenarios.

During this course, you will learn how to:

  • Understand the nature of the Part B examination and the level of academic and clinical performance it requires
  • Analyse orthodontic cases in a structured and integrated way
  • Interpret orthodontic records, radiographs, and clinical photographs accurately and efficiently
  • Construct a clear diagnosis and connect it to a logical and defensible treatment plan
  • Present cases in a structured and professional manner during discussions and examinations
  • Justify treatment planning decisions using sound scientific and clinical principles
  • Discuss alternative treatment options and explain when each approach may or may not be appropriate
  • Develop stronger clinical reasoning and decision-making skills for complex scenarios
  • Approach oral and practical exam questions with greater confidence and clarity
  • Practise the style of thinking required in structured oral examinations
  • Recognise common errors that may weaken performance during case presentation and discussion
  • Improve scientific communication and the ability to explain ideas clearly, concisely, and accurately
  • Integrate biomechanics, diagnosis, treatment objectives, and treatment sequence during case-based discussion
  • Build confidence in handling exam situations that require quick analysis and clear justification

This course is not only about reviewing cases. It is about training candidates in how to present, justify, and defend clinical decisions within a demanding examination setting. It is an essential part of serious preparation within the British Fellowship in Orthodontics (FOrth) pathway.

Course Objectives

The Part B Exam Preparation Course is designed to prepare trainees for the Part B examination by strengthening their ability to analyse cases, formulate diagnoses, justify treatment plans, and engage in exam-based discussions with clarity, structure, and confidence.

The main objectives of this course are to:

  • Introduce trainees to the nature and expectations of the Part B examination
  • Develop the ability to assess orthodontic cases in a comprehensive and systematic way
  • Train candidates to interpret records and clinical data accurately and effectively
  • Improve the ability to build a sound diagnosis and relate it to appropriate treatment objectives
  • Strengthen the capacity to produce treatment plans that can be justified scientifically and clinically
  • Prepare trainees to present and discuss cases in a clear, organised, and professional manner
  • Enhance clinical reasoning when dealing with treatment decisions and alternative approaches
  • Prepare candidates for the demands of the structured oral examination format with greater confidence
  • Improve scientific communication and the accurate use of clinical language
  • Help trainees identify weaknesses in their performance and refine them before the exam
  • Increase academic and mental readiness for questions that require understanding, analysis, and justification rather than recall alone
  • Support the transition from knowledge acquisition to confident presentation, discussion, and defence of clinical decisions

This course represents the stage at which theoretical and clinical understanding is transformed into mature examination performance, helping trainees build the clarity and confidence needed to succeed in an advanced stage of the British orthodontic fellowship pathway.
